Tulsi Vivah

Tulsi Vivah is held on the eleventh day of Shukla Paksha in Kartik month every year. As per Hindu mythology, Tulsi is married to Lord Vishnu by observing all rituals. The festivities continue for five days and ends on Purnima or full moon day. The occasion of Tulsi Vivah is considered to be extremely propitious among the Hindus. This day marks the end of the harvesting season and the commencement of the wedding season in our country. This day is thus a sacred day for the Hindu community.

The divine union of Tulsi and Lord Krishna

As part of rituals, Tulsi Mata is dressed in a red saree and her branches are embellished with red and green bangles, red bindi and kumkum. The mangalsutra in the branch is made of dried turmeric root. Along with the Tulsi plant, sugarcane, amla and tamarind are also planted. On this holy day, Mata Lakshmi is revered as Tulsi and Lord Vishnu is venerated in the form of Saligram. The marriage ceremony is held in the evening as per the auspicious muhurta. Interestingly, a devotee who performs the Tulsi Vivah considers Tulsi as a daughter and gives her away to Shree Krishna and hence earns the virtues of performing the ritual of kanyadaan.

Mythological tale

As per Hindu scriptures, the tulsi plant in one of her births was a chaste woman named Brinda who was married to the Asura king Jalandhar. It was her utmost devotion towards Lord Vishnu that made Jalandhar indestructible. None of the gods could defeat the asura king as the prayers of Brinda made him the most powerful warrior. The gods finally went to Lord Vishnu and pleaded for His mercy. Lord Vishnu disguised as Jalandhar went to see Brinda. When Brinda saw her husband standing in front of her, she was so overjoyed that she ran into his arms
but immediately realized her mistake. That very moment, her chastity was maligned and all the powers of Jalandhar were destroyed. Soon, Jalandhar was killed by Lord Shiva.

Brinda asked Lord Vishnu to reveal His identity. She was shocked to see that it was none other than her own lord who had tricked her. Enraged and shattered from within, she cursed Lord Vishnu that He would turn into a black stone. Lord Vishnu accepted the curse of His ardent devotee and turned into the black stone, Shaligram. Brinda too ended her life by drowning into an ocean. Lord Vishnu blessed Brinda that a tulsi plant will grow from her ashes and it would be married to the Shaligram. This way, she will be united with her lord and her chastity will
not be considered maligned. He also said that He will accept food only when it is offered with a tulsi leaf. Hence the bhog offered to Lord Vishnu always has a tulsi leaf placed on it. This year, the occasion of Tulsi Vivah falls on 20 th November.
